We were delighted to make this Pumpkin & Single Source Cookie recipe to share with you (as was Maggie Mae)! Just as our skin reacts with the changing temperature so does our furry friends. I’m very lucky to have an extremely healthy dog but she does tend to suffer from some patches of dry skin during the colder months. Last year I started occasionally adding SBT Single Source Oil & Coconut Oil to her food and it helped instantly.  I also noticed that her coat was much stronger and shinier and she had a little extra ‘pep in her step.’

I will admit my dog is extremely spoiled and gets a cookie every time I leave the house – so I thought if I’m going to be giving her cookies all the time I should firstly make them healthy and secondly make them beneficial. So here we are with these delicious nourishing Pumpkin & Single Source Dog Cookie recipe. (see below)

Pumpkin & Single Source Dog Cookie Recipe

for a happy dog & a healthy coat

  • 1 can organic pumpkin (we used Farmers Market – 398 ml or just shy of 2 cups)
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon SBT Seabuckthorn Single Source Oil
  • 1/3 cup whole oats
  • 5 cups flour (of your choosing based on your dogs nutritional needs/sensitivities)

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Combine all wet ingredients (pumpkin, eggs, coconut oil, & Seabuckthorn Single Source Oil) in a large bowl and mix until smooth
  3. Mix in oatmeal
  4. Begin to add flour 1 cup at a time. I used my mixer for the first 2 cups and switched to my hands after that to avoid making a mess – however if you have a stand mixer you could easily mix it all in there. I used 3.5 cups of flour for this recipe, but you really want to go off the feel of the dough. Everything should be mixed completely and shouldn’t be ‘sticky’ you want it to be the same consistency as cookie dough or maybe a little bit dryer even.
  5. Gather dough into a ball and roll out on a floured surface until about ¼ inch thick. If you roll it out too thin your cookies could get dry and brittle.
  6. Use your cookie cutter to cut out as many bones as you can. Place on a non-stick baking sheet or one that has been lined with parchment.
  7. Continue to roll your dough steps 4 & 5 until all dough has been used.
  8. Bake in the oven for approximately 45 minutes. This will depend on the shape of the cookies & how thick you rolled out your dough. You want the cookies to be 100% hard for safe consumption & storage. Be careful not to burn them – it only takes about an extra 15 to do that (I would know!).
  9. Let cool before giving them to your pup for a healthy & delicious treat.
  10. Store them in a cool dry place and give to your dog as desired.

This recipe makes about 50-60 cookies – they will store for a little while but you could cut the recipe in half if you wanted.

We hope your dogs love these cookies as much as our ‘taste tester’ Maggie Mae did.

Palm Oil is one of the most destructive ingredients on the planet – and it’s in almost everything.

Palm Oil has been used in everything from food to pharmaceuticals, personal care, animal feed, & even cleaning products. It has many names and comes in many forms – it is found in about 50% of the products you would find at the supermarket.

In recent years more light has been spread on the devastation that Palm oil leaves behind. Animals have been killed & lost their homes – especially orangutans & elephants for Palm oil production and it doesn’t end there. Recent visits to two of the largest ‘sustainable’ Palm oil farms in the world exposed the use of child labor, unethically low wages, unsustainable & illegal practices, + employees are being exposed to Paraquat (a toxic herbicide banned in western countries).

Although the discussion is getting bigger – it’s still not big enough. Banning Palm oil is a cause very near & dear to our hearts at SBT.  After doing more investigating into our RSPO palm oil  there was no way we could continue to use it in our products – so we removed it from our soap & salves!  So far this year we have already cut over 1000 lbs of Palm oil from being used!

Please help us support the ban on Palm oil & urge your favourite companies to do the same. There are many natural, organic, & ‘green’ companies still using Palm oil in their products that are very happy to keep it under the radar so let’s give them the push they need to remove it all together.

Starting in November we will be posting weekly environmental & sustainable tips + lots of eco-awareness and you can be sure palm oil will be high on our list so that we can get the conversation going about this ingredient & the affect it has on our planet & its inhabitants.

SBT OIls Naturally Healing Nutrition

Seabuckthorn is one of the most nutritionally dense shrubs on the planet. Every part of the plant contains bio-active compounds that support human health. Unfortunately as demand has increased for the extracts of Seabuckthorn, the potential for adulteration and poor quality has also risen.

We have been engaged with the Seabuckthorn industry for over 20 years and during that time have become familiar with the nutritional constituents of the different parts of the plant. SII (Seabuckthorn International Inc.) has been very fortunate to work closely with one of the top producers of USDA Organic Seabuckthorn extracts in the world. With reference to the scientific literature and through regular 3rd party analysis, we know what the nutritional profile of these extracts should look like so we quickly recognize when they are not right.

High Demand Brings Problems

Because they are in such high demand for skincare products, the quality of Seabuckthorn Seed and Fruit Oils has become increasingly problematic over the past few years. There are a lot of folks out there who are offering Seabuckthorn Oil for sale. We receive emails daily and what we read is frequently surprising and shocking. First of all, the people selling the Seabuckthorn Seed or Fruit Oil are not necessarily the ones who produce it. This means that the seller may not have a clue what he or she is selling.

For example, we have had people send us pictures of Mountain Ash berries thinking it was Seabuckthorn. In one case when we questioned the very low value of the Omega 7 in the Fruit Oil the seller told us that he could sell it to us more cheaply if Omega 7 wasn’t particularly important to us. It is important to us!

In another instance it was clear from the analysis that the Seabuckthorn Oil had been cut with a cheaper oil such as sunflower or canola. If we were not so familiar with the properties and appearance of high quality Seabuckthorn Seed and Fruit Oils we could be fooled into thinking that we were buying the real thing.

Quality Counts!

This is a very serious issue.  As the growing body of scientific literature is showing, Seabuckthorn Oils when taken internally, have demonstrated a significant improvement in a number of health conditions. However, the effectiveness of the oils in treating these conditions is completely dependent on their purity and the values of the bio-active compounds in the oils.

As a company that markets Seabuckthorn Seed and Fruit Oils for their therapeutic action, we are fortunate to have a long history of experience with the oils. This not only includes the nutritional analysis but also the sensory analysis- the smell, the taste and the appearance of the oils. This experience means that we know that the Seabuckthorn Oils we market are of the highest quality and purity available.

Ingredient Adulteration – A Widespread Problem

A recent item in the industry publication New Hope shows that this problem is by no means exclusive to Seabuckthorn Oils:

“Ingredient adulteration is the biggest problem affecting the supplement market today. The American Botanical Council’s Mark Blumenthal talks about what herbal organizations are doing to help brand holders and marketers understand how to properly identify and test incoming raw materials so they will not fall victim to inauthentic material.” You can watch the video of Mark Blumenthal speak about it here.

What About The Consumer?

But what about the consumer? How can they have confidence that they are getting the high quality product they are expecting? Unfortunately this is a complex problem and the responsibility lies with the supplier to ensure the quality of the product. What the consumer can do however is be selective about what and where they purchase. Read labels. Is the product 100% Seabuckthorn Oil or are there additives or carrier oils? Check out the company and their social media. Call or email them and ask questions. And always check that spidey sense before buying!

Over the last year we have been making some BIG changes at SBT Seabuckthorn. To kick off the year we eliminated palm oil from our cleansing bars. Then we eliminated palm oil from our Soothing Salves and made them 100% vegan by swapping our beeswax for plant sourced candelilla wax. Next we reformulated our creams a little bit to offer you the best & cleanest ingredients available. Then we launched our new Seabuckthorn Wellness Matcha & gave our wonderful Seabuckthorn Teas a well deserved update. After that we updated the looks of our oils – they are still the same on the inside just with a new ‘party dress’ on. All our 30, 50, & 100ml oils also now come with a dropper for easy & mess free application/usage. Lastly, entering our final quarter of the year we have bid farewell to our Single Source Capsules. We have been getting inquiries in regards to why we removed this product from our line and here are some of the reasons:

  1. We are moving in the direction of a 100% vegan line and as the capsule casings contain gelatin the capsules don’t align with our company vision & mission.  As all of our products are already cruelty free we have decided to go in a 100% vegan direction to lessen our environmental footprint.  Also – we love our animal friends, we would never ever test our products on them – so why would we make a product that uses a byproduct from them?
  2. Seabuckthorn Oil is 100% sustainable. By not having this oil encapsulated we are able to have a 100% sustainable product because it doesn’t contain any animal byproduct.  There is no such thing as a sustainable product that contains animal products or by products.
  3. Single Source Oil is more eco-friendly than the capsules. As this oil isn’t encapsulated it goes through less manufacturing & less shipping then the capsules did. This results in a much smaller footprint in terms of shipping & manufacturing emissions.  This in turn also helps us keeps the costs down for our wonderful customers (that’s you!) & we are proud to have not raised our prices in the last 10+ years despite the high costs of seabuckthorn & low(er) canadian dollar.
  4. You can still take your Single Source! Our Single Source Oil (30, 50, & 100ml) is the very same 100% pure organic seabuckthorn oil that we use(d) for our capsules.
  5. Single Source Oil is way more versatile and just as convienant! It can be taken by the spoon (1/4 tsp. twice per day or 1/2 tsp. at once), added to smoothies, soups, juices, chia puddings, & more.
  6. Your nutrients will be more rapidly absorbed because your body doesn’t have to work harder to break down the capsule casing. This is great for everyone but especially those with stomach & digestive issues.  For maximum absorption take with your two healthiest meals of the day.
  7. It can be used topically as well! A couple drops can be added to your favourite skin oil/cream for an extra nutritional seabuckthorn boost.
  8. Single Source Oil is AMAZING for your oral health & oral mucosa. Seabuckthorn Seed Oil helps to remove plaque from your teeth while Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil (Amazing Omgea 7) helps to repair & balance oral mucosa. Seabuckthorn Oil is also a powerful analgesic & anti-inflammatory which will help with swollen sore throats come cold & flu season.
  9. We are going to be offering our 100ml Single Source Oil for the same price as our Single Source Capsules (90s). One bottle of Single Source 90’s contains 90 grams of oil where the 100ml Single Source Oil contains 100 grams. This means you are getting an extra 5 servings per bottle for the same price. Each 100 ml bottle of oil contains aproximately 100 servings or a 50 day supply (at recommended dosage). Also, did we mention that this oil is good for 5 years from the date of manufacture!?! Which means even if you forget about it in the back of your cupboard (which we don’t want you to but lets be honest everyone does it) it will still be good come Spring cleaning time (for the next 3-4 years).
  10. Lastly, our Single Source Oil (all sizes) come in a unbreakable glass jar with a dropper top for easy & mess free measuring. Glass is simply the best in terms of packaging because it is the purest way that products can be stored.  We use amber glass bottles because it helps the oil to hold its nutrition (some nutrients like carotenoids can break down with light exposure).  It should be stored at room temperature in a dry cupboard.

We hope you are as excited about all of these big changes at SBT as we are. We strive to offer you the best products possible, not only in terms of quality & ingredients, but in terms of our eco-responsibilty to support, heal, & revitalize this beautiful planet that is our home. Did you know over a million hectares of Seabuckthorn has been planted worldwide to repair damaged land? This is because Seabuckthorn actually heals the very earth that gives it life by replacing nitrogen back in to damaged soil. It gives back to earth more than it takes – a mentality which we have adopted at SBT for a greener future.
